Embrace Your Piano or Face the Music

What to do with the family piano?

Over my years as a designer, I’ve found that many of my clients often struggle how to decorate their family piano in a small room. They meticulously decorated thier room, carefully selecting colors, furniture, and accessories. And then there it sits – the piano. A magnificent beast of an instrument, commanding attention and seemingly defying any attempt to blend seamlessly into the decor.

Many people try to ignore this "elephant in the room," hoping its presence will somehow fade into the background. They might try to downplay it, treating it as just another piece of furniture. But let's be honest, in most rooms, the piano IS the focal point. It's a statement piece, a monument to music, and it demands to be acknowledged.

So, what's a music-loving homeowner to do?

My best advice is if you love your piano, embrace it

  • Let the piano be the inspiration for your room's design. Choose colors and styles that complement its elegance.

  • Create a Gallery Wall: Lean into your artsy side by creating a gallery showcasing interesting art, sheet music, framed photos of famous pianists, or even your own musical creations around the piano.

  • Add a Touch of Glamour: Incorporate luxurious elements like a fur on the piano bench, a crystal chandelier, or a pair of elegant floor lamps to enhance the piano's grandeur.

  • Create a Performance Space: Arrange seating around the piano to create a cozy concert hall atmosphere.

Love the Piano or face the Music (and Rehome the Piano)

If you've truly decided that the piano clashes with your desired aesthetic or simply takes up too much space, it's time to be honest with yourself.

  • Find a New Home: Consider donating your piano to a school, community center, or a local church.

  • Rent It Out: If you still enjoy playing occasionally, rent a practice space or consider a digital piano that can be easily stored away.

Ultimately, the decision is yours. But remember, the piano deserves to be treated with the respect it commands. Whether you choose to embrace its presence or find it a new home, do so with intention and grace.
